Mad Marge and The Stonecutters - Liberated! CD Review

Have you heard about a thing called “second album syndrome”, where bands have a hard time surpassing their first release. Well, this rule does not apply to our favorite trio of Aussie mortuary musicians. Zombie Ghost Train delivers an album that is not only better than its predecessor “Glad Rags & Body Bags”, but goes far beyond the expectations. If you are looking for the bands typical psychobilly- voodoo-goth tunes, you will not be disappointed, but there is a lot more about this album. “Dealing the Death Card” is too diverse to be an ordinary psychobilly record. Stu Arkoff and Capt. Reckless have found inspiration in various genres, from rhythm & blues (“Mystery Woman”), 50’s rock’n’roll (“The Big Fog”), horror-punk to 80’s hard-rock (“Dead End Crew”). There are of course some straight psychobilly songs, like the title track “Dealing the Death Card”. Capt. Reckless’ high tone vocals are perfect for the beautiful, guitar-driven, somber ballad “Long dark Night”. Zombie Ghost Train are skilled musicians and you can hear it in the Pulp Fiction style instrumental track, “The Undead Sea”. The album also includes a cover of “Teddy Boy Boogie” from Crazy Cavan & the Rhythm Rockers. Zombie Ghost Train make psychobilly songs for music fans. I bet that “Dealing the Death Card” will stay in your CD player (or whatever) for a quite long time.
