Dead Boy Productions with Under A Nightmare

Horrorpunk/Metal band Under A Nightmare - Group Photo

Under a Nightmare is a horrorpunk/metal band from Pennsylvania. Keenan from the band took some time to answer some questions for us. Under a Nightmare is a band that is definitely worth checking out if you like your punk with a little metal. Check out our reviews for a review of their album Monsters 89.

Where is the band from and when did the band form?

We hail from the zombie capital of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The band formed around the first week of October 2002, when our bassist Jordy and I met in art school.

How would you describe your music?

Under A Nightmare music is fast, horror inspired, life experienced, and fun fueled for mostly a good time or a bit of something different. We try to experiment with it and make as many friends as possible with a majority of it being based around the creepy awesome world of horror.

Where have you played and what bands have you played with?

We played all throughout Pennsylvania for a while and in early 2004 started venturing out among the east coast hitting several states including PA, NY, WV, VA, OH, DE, TN, and MI, among others. We generally drive anywhere from an hour to eight hours depending on how horrible gas prices are for two beat up cars. Some of the bands we've played with that were cool have been Blitzkid, The Independents, The Serpenteens, Late Night Zero, Horror Of 59, Dr. Chud's X-Ward, The Rosedales, Boney Fiend, The Graveyard Boulevard, and tons tons tons more. We also opened for The Misfits in June 2006 at Mr. Smalls Theater, it was a great experience. We love playing with any type of rock band that knows how to keep things fun and real.

What are your thoughts on downloading music?

Well I personally do it a lot, and I don't mind if someone's downloading Under A Nightmare CDs because its just a small bit of promotion for us. The music industry has drastically changed over the years and for small bands like us it just gets our name out a little when there's no other options. I mean there’s the whole battle over not making money and so on with big bands and even small bands starting out, but as far as our music, I say go ahead and help us out. Even if someone can get five of their friends to dig us I'm really happy. There may come a day when it sucks to lose sales and what not, but as a band without a label right now, if someone would rather download our CD to check us out where as they might not spend five bucks to buy one of our albums and even hear us I'm ok. It's helped us get shows, interviews, and reviews but I really sit in the middle as far as music overall.

How effective do you think MySpace is to your band?

Well, along with free downloads of our last album, MySpace has actually gained us real fans. There’s a million billion people out there but once in a while someone comes on our site and leaves us a comment or message that's into us and it really does mean something. It helps to know that even a small portion of people can dig our stuff. We try to use MySpace well, we even have annual contests and give out a lot of CDs, shirts, and stickers to people on there. We've never gotten out of the country nor to the west coast and we've made a lot of friends and I do use that word honestly because kids have stuck around and hung out with us when we finally meet them and we also get nice packages in the mail from people who we've met. It helps get us shows and right now that’s very important because keeping on the road and in clubs means we're keeping busy and making albums as well as getting the name out there. We just want to keep doing what we're doing and so far MySpace has actually been a great help.

Do you have any releases out? If so, where are fans able to get them?

We currently have 3 full-length albums, which can all be purchased through the band directly in the mail right now from our MySpace. We'd like to get them on Interpunk.com soon so people can get them online as well. We've been getting our own pressings through places like disk faktory and have been doing it this way for while until we can finally get a good label to help us out.
