Dead Boy Productions with Stellar Corpses

The Stellar Corpses are a psycho band from Santa Cruz, California.  These boys are fucking awesome and you should check them out when you get the chance.  Look for our review of their EP “Respect the Dead” and check out the deal that these guys have for you at their next show!

Where is the band from and when did the band form?

We are all from Santa Cruz, a.k.a Santa Carla, where the film “The Lost Boys” was shot. We formed in the Spring of 2005 and played our first public shows later that year on Halloween weekend.

What would you say the scene is like in Santa Cruz? Here in So. Cal it comes off as a lot of a college/party town so what is it really like?

The scene in Santa Cruz is great. It's about the same as LA, just not as big. Santa Cruz is a college town, but those kids stay on campus a lot. Downtown it's mostly tourists during the day and locals at night, that's when the Vampires come out.

How would you describe your music?

We have a rad drummer (Matt Macabre), an upright bassist that shreds (Dan Mothman), rhythm guitar with lots of distortion (Emilio Menze), a hollow-body lead guitar & lead vocals (Me), and lots and lots of back-up gang vocals! That’s how I’d describe it. As far as labels go, we’re like psychobilly or 50’s horror punk rock n’ roll. Imagine if Vampira and Sid Vicious had a kid together …he’d probably like us.

Where have you played and what bands have you played with?

We just got back from the Living Dead Fest California Tour where we played with the Rezurex, Blitzkid, The Other, More than Never, and Order of the Fly. We’ve gotten a lot of attention from that, the fans have all been really really fucking awesome. We have only been around for a little more than a year and we’ve already played with Mad Sin, The Meteors, The Quakes, Calabrese, Calavera, Os Catelipticos, Nim Vind, Plan 9, The Phenomenauts, and a bunch of other amazing bands. We’re really lucky.

Other than the Living Dead Tour have you just played locally? You have opened for some big name bands (some of whom we have interviews with on our site) where did you open for them at?

Well actually our first show with the Rezurex was in Hollywood at the Knitting Factory. That's also where we played with Os Catelipticos, Calavera and Plan 9. The rest of them came to Nor Cal.

What are your thoughts on downloading music?

Ummm… well I do it sometimes. I think it’s just the way it is now. I mean, it’s a great way to check out bands. Download it, put it on your iPod, rock out to it, then if you really like it, go to the show, buy a CD and some other merch too. It also depends on how good the CD itself looks, how many pictures and lyrics are in the liner notes, and how good the band is live. I guess I just don’t care enough to throw a fit about it.

How effective do you think MySpace is to your band?

It’s really effective. We keep in touch with lots of our fans through there. It’s also great for promoting shows. It’s funny, cuz I used to go around putting up flyers on telephone poles a lot, but now it’s considered littering, so we mostly use MySpace. We still do flyers around town though, store windows and coffee shops. Flyering is an art form.

Do you have any releases out? If so, where are fans able to get them?

Our first release is called “Respect the Dead.” It’s a 6 song EP that you can get on Interpunk.com, crazyloverecords.de, and at our shows of course. It has good artwork, some pictures, all the lyrics, and a big skull on the top of the CD. People really seem to love it, we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from it and a few offers for record contracts.

Did you release your EP yourselves? How difficult or easy was that?

Yes, we released it ourselves. It was a lot of hard work but it was a great experience. We recorded with our friend Joe Clements from the Santa Cruz Punk band, Fury 66. For mastering he sent us to Si Moorehead who is from another legendary SC band, B'Last! So there is a lot of good mojo in the EP. Our friend Paul, an oldschool SC Psycho, did the cover art and our other friend Tax drew the skull logo. As you can see, a lot of Santa Cruz culture is in this EP. It has been tons of fun. We learned a lot from it and made a lot of new friends.

Anything else you would like to add?

Just that we loved playing in Corona and Hollywood and we can’t wait to get back down there soon to see all our new friends!
