Dead Boy Productions with Spooky Deville

Salt Lake City Psychobilly band Spooky Deville

Spooky Deville, please introduce yourselves.

Sure thing... Billy Diesel hits the drums and is from Kansas City, Kansas, El Cucuy slaps Upright and is from Salt Lake City, Utah, Dozer! is untalented and tries to sing and is from East Bay Area, California and Kid Gruesome tears it up on the Geetar and Hails from Detroit, Michigan.

When did it all get started?

Kid: I moved up from Southern Utah and was looking for people to start a band with when I ran into El Cucuy. We had a 3 piece going for a bit and we booked a show.

Cucuy: That fell apart 2 weeks before the show actually happened and we didn't want to cancel so we threw another band together last minute.

Diesel: I didn't even want to be in a band at the time.

Dozer!: I didn't ever think I'd be in a band...but somehow we threw together a set in a week and played a damn good show. We are all from different places and all kind of ended up in SLC.

Cucuy: Yeah...that's a whole other story.

What do you call the evil sounds that come from Spooky Deville?

Dozer!: Fun as Hell.

Cucuy: Of course we draw our influence from a lot of different sources like Rockabilly, Horror, Jazz, Hardcore, Industrial, Honky Tonk, Metal, Blues, etc... But really, we just try to do what we do and have a good time.

Kid: Yup...a lot of bands are too caught up in trying to have a particular "sound" and what certain genres sound like. We aren't saying we don't sound a certain way but at the end of the day, we are a Psychobilly band.

Tell us what inspires your music?

Kid: Honestly, us provoking each other's stupid ideas.

Diesel: That pretty much nails it. Someone will be messing around on their instrument and we'll hear a certain thing in it that we like and just refine it until it sounds good.

Dozer!: No one person in the band does all of the writing. We all have a bit of say in what a song sounds like and every one of them is a collaborative effort.

Talk to us about the tunes you put out without a record label?

Diesel: We kind of rushed ourselves into recording. We put out a 6 song E.P. called, "Six Sick, Sick Songs" by our second show in April of '06 and then recorded "The Nightlife E.P" in June.

Cucuy: "The Nightlife E.P." never officially got put out so we went back in a few weeks later and recorded five more songs and put out "Breathe Transylvania". It's been a really good experience although we wish we would have waited, but Hindsight is 20/20. We love the CD but the Live Show is where it's at. You get a chance to feel and see the energy.

Kid: Most of the songs will sound different live than they do on CD because a lot of the songs were pretty much written in the studio so they have just changed and sound more polished.

Where can we get your creepy music?

Cucuy: Right now, the only place to get them is either at a live show or just message us on our MySpace page and we'll make arrangements to send them out.

Dozer!: We are also in the middle of trying to get them on iTunes and other online downloads and distribution.

Tell us about where you’re from and the scene there?

Diesel: Here in Salt Lake City, the scene is pretty much one big family. We draw from all different crowds and everyone for the most part is friends.

Cucuy: It is not uncommon to see Metalheads, Greasers, Goths, Punks, Skins and Hardcore kids all at our shows....and everyone gets into it and moves around.

Dozer!: It is very diverse here and everyone is really supportive of us. There is only a hairline separating the different scenes so why not bring them all together. We are all here to have a good time anyway.

What is touring with Spooky Deville like?

Cucuy: Every time we go out, I have the time of my life.

Dozer!: It is pretty rad to go around and see new stuff everyday and meet way cool people and make new friends. I don't think we've ever really had a bad experience on the road.

Cucuy: Yea...certain things might suck at the time but after its over it's something to laugh at.

Kid: (Laughs) So many good stories and good times.

Which bands are your favorite to tour with?

Dozer!: We haven't had a chance to really take other bands on tour yet and we've only been around about a year, so every out of town gig or trip we take is pretty much on our own.

Kid: We love playing on the road though. Not too many people really know who we are yet so it's always cool to come in a place where people are a bit skeptical and by the end of the night, everyone is singing along and wants more.

What bands would you like to tour with?

Diesel: The Polyphonic Spree.

Cucuy: No, Diesel.

Dozer!: We've met a lot of really good bands but I'd love to tour with Zombeast and Black Rose Phantoms. I'd like to work with them more and they are all way rad guys.

Cucuy: Yeah they are...I'd pick Calabrese and DieMonsterDie.

Kid: I'll have to say Our Corpse Destroyed and the Goddamn Gallows.

Diesel: Ok...I gotta redeem myself. I'll pick Mad Sin.

Cucuy: That's better.

Dozer!: How about Slayer? That would be bitchin'.

What is the main focus for Spooky Deville?

Cucuy: Have fun and keep on writing good songs.

Dozer!: Agreed.

Kid: We are all good friends and just want to keep on doing what we are doing and see how far we can go with it.

Dozer!: Agreed.

Diesel: (Laughs) We have met a lot of rad people and want to meet more and just keep getting better.

Dozer!: Agreed.

How much partying goes on with you guys?

Kid: Either it is all way or none at all.....usually all the way though.

Dozer!: Yeah, we love to have a good time but try to keep it at a reasonable level, but that only works for a few of us.

Cucuy: (Laughs)

Dozer!: ...and for so long. We might have a few drinks before a show but never get straight up drunk before our set...that just doesn't work for us personally and we want to put on a damn good show and one that's memorable for all the good reasons.

Talk to us about anal penetration in Utah?

Diesel: (Laughs)

Cucuy: Oh Jeez...

Kid: (Laughs) Yeah. For some reason, the Mormon girls around here seem to believe that they can take it in the butt and still be a Virgin.

Dozer!: They can believe it all they want...fine by me.

Cucuy: Whatever guy started spreading that rumor is my hero.

Dozer!: Yes sir.

Favorite horror movie?

Dozer!: That's kind of an unfair question, there's so many!

Diesel: Yeah, that's hard to pick.

Dozer!: I guess a very condensed list would be Hellraiser, Dracula, Dr. Cagliari's Cabinet, Birds, Visitor Q, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Halloween, Reanimator, CHUD, From Hell, Devil's Rejects, Psycho Beach Party.

Cucuy: You can't go wrong with the Classics; Frankenstein, Wolfman, Nosferatu, Freddy Krueger...yada yada yada.

Kid: Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, Milo and Otis. I'm more into Slashers but always love a good Horror Flick. And the Ultra-Violence in modern Horror Movies is amazing.

Diesel: I like Psychological Horrors like Event Horizon, The Cell, Session 9, stuff like that.

Thanks guys it's been a pleasure; any last words?

Diesel: Cabbage.

Kid: Christ was a Jew.

Cucuy: Keep it Creepy.

Dozer!: Keep it Krunk.
