Dead Boy Productions Interviews Soda X

How did you come up with the name "Soda X"?

Kamilla Vanilla: Miss Jannicke and I were sitting brainstorming one evening, trying to find the perfect name. The word "Soda" kept coming up, so we stuck with that and added the X thrown on it. It sounds good, right!

Tell us a little bit about the band members; describe yourselves.

Kamilla Vanilla: We're a bunch of individuals. We all come from different musical backgrounds... and countries... Well, almost! haha.

I'm Danish, Linus is Swedish, Jannicke is half-Norweigan, half-Swedish and Cris is American.

Even if we're a band, that doesn't mean we all think alike or share the same opinions and I think that's what shines through in our music. Soda X is a band by all means. We're all in it together and no one in the band is more important than anyone else. Some bands put more focus on some members more than others and we're not into that. We all play the lead role!

Linus is hands-down one of the best drummers I have ever heard and he's a very talented musician that can, and will, pick up any instrument and play it... Fast. Actually, fast is a word that describes him very well. He's one of those people who has 10 balls in the air, but manages to catch them all - on his timing.

Miss Jannicke is an amazing person and guitar player. She's actually a luthier/guitar tech. She built her own guitar and knows more about her instrument than any musician that I've known. She is a big nerd, but a very awesome one. I love the fact that she's so nerdy. She's very charming, funny and very focused.

Miss Cris is the newest member and when she joined, we had already written a lot of songs, but she caught up with us so fast. She has a university degree in music and is very passionate and involved with that she does. She's a bit of a dreamer, but that's perfect because that's just what we need. We're so happy to have found her! She's the perfect bass player for Soda X.

Miss Jannicke: Kamilla has been writing music for years, but she never used it for anything, so when we started writing she had lyrics and melodies for everything we came up with. Music is her life and she's been involved in the music scene for years.

Miss Cris: I am nerdy too! haha. I love Kamilla's energy and she has great stage presence and charisma. A true entertainer! Jannicke is rad guitarist! I love the notes she chooses to play. She has great style and I love hanging out with her. Linus a very happy-go-lucky guy who is an AMAZING drummer! So refreshing for me as a bassist to play with him! I heart all of the members!

Have any of you been in bands in the past?

Kamilla Vanilla: Oh yeah, all of us! Past and present. Cris was in a couple of ska bands in the late 90's/early 2000's called The Cover-Ups and The Twi-Lites, and most recently she was in a punk band called The Stalkings. Linus is the king of bands. He pretty much does everything from hip hop to hardcore. He's in another band with Jannicke called Disco Volante. They're actually leaving to tour Japan and the UK tomorrow. I was in a band called the HorrorPops for 7 years until I left last summer, so all together you can say we've been all over when it comes to music.

How and/or why did you get together?

Miss Jannicke: Kamilla and I met at a punk show in Hollywood and we became friends. With the both of us being creative and into a lot of different alternative music, it kind of came naturally, but spontaneous.

Kamilla Vanilla: Yeah, I think we were fooling around with the idea of a band for months before Jannicke knocked her hand in the table and said, "Let's do this band," and I think we had 5-6 songs done in less than one week! hahaha!

Were you all friends before you started the band?

Kamilla Vanilla: Linus and Jannicke go way back and I met Linus through Jannicke. Cris we met through mutual friends. It's actually amazing Cris and I didn't meet before we did, 'cause it seems like all our friends knew the both of us before we knew each other.

How do you all get along?

Miss Jannicke/ Kamilla Vanilla: GREAT... So far so good! hahaha!

What kind of music can we expect from you?

Miss Jannicke/Kamilla Vanilla: We're still a new band, but the direction we're going in is heading towards "punky, dark, rocking, alternative with a twist of New Wave." Our lyrics are on the darker side and we know for a fact that you will never hear a "funny" or novelty-type song from us! Our roots are punk and since when is punk funny?

Who are your influences?

Kamilla Vanilla: People are our influences.

How does the song writing process with the group work?

Miss Jannicke/Kamilla Vanilla: We're all a part of the writing. Sometimes the music comes before the lyrics and melodies and sometimes the other way around.

Our two newest songs, Linus made the music for and when he played them, they exactly fit two melodies and lyrics Kamilla had made, so you can easily say we work good together.

Are any shows being scheduled?

Kamilla Vanilla: We've gotten a lot of offers already, but the truth is we just aren't ready. None of us wanna go on stage and play a so-so show, but we can't wait to be ready to play shows! We all love being on stage, rocking out and putting on a show... Just you wait and see!

Who are you hoping to tour with?

Miss Jannicke: Any cool band with cool people in it. We don't wanna go on tour with some band just because they're popular. We started this band to be creative with what we love doing and if we got offered to go on tour with some killer band we like, we would do it in a heartbeat, but we don't have a wish list.

Are you planning on putting on a CD and being a band full time?

Kamilla Vanilla: We would love to! We have enough songs to make our first album a double, or maybe even a "Best of"! But for now we only have 5 songs recorded... The first 5 we wrote and we have 3 of them uploaded to our MySpace page. We just wanna build up our name and see/hear people's response and take it from there. The music industry sucks these days and we're in no rush to burn out before we really get started. That may sound arrogant but we call it realistic.

What scene(s) do you think Soda X will be found in?

Kamilla Vanilla: All of them!!!!!!!! Soda X isn't about fitting into scenes. Scenes are cool and we all live and breathe it in different ways, but Soda X is music made by people who love music. For ourselves and for people who love and appreciate music.

How soon can we expect something from you guys? (shows, cd, music, merch, etc..)

Kamilla Vanilla: We're in the process of finding a second guitar player to join the band, so if you play a killer guitar and are looking to join an awesome band, please check out our music and blog on www.myspace.com/sodaxla - And if you like what you hear, shoot us an e-mail!

Along with a second guitar player, comes more music and that goes hand-in-hand with shows, merch and albums. We all hope for sooner than later!

Any last words or anything else I've missed and liked to add?

Miss Jannicke, Miss Cris and Kamilla Vanilla: Thanks for the interview, thanks for reading this and hopefully we will see you soon!
