The Scourge of Rivercity is a four piece from Leeds (UK). They play an eclectic mixture of Psychobilly, Hardcore-punk or just straight rock. They’re about to release their debut album in the next couple of months. I asked Chris (drums) to reveal some details about the band. Here is what he had to say.

Could you present the band?

We're a four-piece, with Greg on vocals, Rob on guitar, Smalls on double bass & myself (Chris) on drums.

For how long you’ve been a band?

We've been a band for around 2 years now.

Your music is very diverse; it ranges from melodic psychobilly to hardcore punk. How has that happened? Do you come from different musical backgrounds?

We all share an eclectic taste in music. We listen to everything from The Doors to Depeche Mode, so I suppose that's where our diversity comes from. We've all been heavily involved in the Hardcore scene in the past, but wanted to do something different, so we're really happy that people like it, whether they're into Punk, Hardcore, Psychobilly, or anything else.

What are your main influences, musically and lyrically?

That's a tough one. It's fair to say that we've been inspired by bands like Tiger Army and Nekromantix who have put a contemporary twist on Psychobilly, but aside from that it's difficult to say! I suppose our main influences are bands like The Bronx, Murder City Devils, Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt and Queens Of The Stone Age, but we have Indie influences from bands like The Smiths as well, and Country influences from artists like Johnny Cash and Eddie Cochran too. It's a real mixture.

How is the touring experience so far? Do you enjoy it? Who were you touring with?

The Scourge of River City performing live.

Well, we're yet to tour properly, but will be hitting the road with our new album after it's release early next year. We love playing shows like any other band, so we're itching to get back in the van! Career highlights so far are playing with our friends in Hot Rocket Trio, Radio City Riot, and Judder & The Jack Rabbits, but we've played alongside The Astro Zombies, The Grit, The Long Tall Texans, The Vincent Razorbacks...the list goes on. We're soon to be playing with The Unseen and The Peacocks as well which we're really looking forward to!

What about the songwriting? How does that happen?

For us, song-writing has always been an enjoyable experience. As I already mentioned, we all listen to a wide range of artists and genres, so we're rarely short on ideas, and try not to restrict ourselves to playing the kind of music you'd normally associate with having a double bass in the band.

You’re actually recording your debut album. How are you feeling with the recording?

The recording has been long and hard...there's been blood, sweat and tears...there's been late nights and early mornings...but we're all really happy with the end result! This is the first time any of us has recorded a full-length, so it's been a steep learning curve, but we're lucky to have been working with our good friend Lol at Purple Studios in Norwich, so it's been a great experience overall!

Could you share something more about your future album?

I don't want to give too much away, but it's got something for everyone!

Are you looking for a record label, or do you want to do things on your own?

We're releasing our debut album on Cherry Red Records which is a fantastic opportunity for us. We never had any expectations when we started the band, so to have a label that's interested in putting out a record for us is amazing. As far as the future goes, we plan to work hard, play hard and see what happens.

Any last words, something I forgot or you would like to tell?

Just a huge thank you to anyone and everyone that's helped us out so far, to all the people that come to our shows, hang out and have fun with us.
