Dan-Zig & Dead Boy

Dead Boy Productions with The Curs

All right so the band name is the Curs? How did that come about?

Stretch: Well a cur is like a mongrel kinda dog, a mangy mongrel kinda mutt dog, or just a bastard kind of a person.

Ian: We figured it was a good name for the band, a selfish slacker kind of name.

Stretch: I thought it would be kind of a good name for a psychobilly band it’s kind of a mutt music.

Who are we talking to?

Stretch: Well I’m Stretch upright bass and sing.

Cam: Cam and I play the drums.

Ian: Ian and I play guitar.

Where are you guys actually from?

Stretch: We are from like North Hollywood, Glendale.

How long have you been a band?

Stretch: Well us two we have been playing together for over two years now but we have been playing together since junior year (in high school).

You play around a lot?

Ian: Wherever we can play.

Stretch: Wherever we can play, we play around a pretty good amount we have played at the Key Club a couple of times, backyards, we play dive places.

Who have you guys played with so far?

Stretch: We have opened up for the Coffin Draggers a couple of times, for the Nekromantix we’ve played with lots of local bands here. We opened for Los Gatos Locos, Psycho Demons.

You have played a lot of places around here any favorites?

Stretch: Key Club, good sound, good venue.

Ian: Definitely.

You have a different psychobilly sound we were talking to Rich (of Black Cat Entertainment) before we saw you guys play and he was saying you had more of an 80s style psychobilly sound a lot of newer stuff is metal.

Stretch: Yeah there is a lot of metal influence punk influence we do have a good amount of punk influence. The music that we listen to, I listen to a lot of old school psychobilly, old country and punk and most of us do so we try to keep it more of an old school sound instead of more metal.

I kind of got a Frantic Flintstones, Klingonz type sound what about the rest of you guys is that what you guys listen to?

Ian: Whatever bad taste leads to. Whatever is bad taste that no one else is going to like.

Stretch: Whatever is loud.

So you said you came from a punk background so what kind of bands there? English too? I notice you have a GBH shirt on (pointing to drummer Cam)

Stretch: Yeah I was getting into punk and then I found out about psychobilly and I got a bit more into that I was never too big into punk. I grew up listening to Hank Williams and I like a lot of old garage type music.

Ian: We were trying for a Beatles sound actually. Well we both liked the sound we thought it was very different.

What’s next? Demos?

Stretch: We have a demo which we forgot to bring. We got the show last minute. The Howlers were supposed to open, but Eli (the Howlers vocalist) got laryngitis I think so I got an email last night from Rich asking if we could play.

What about the demo?

Stretch: We have a six song demo and we are hoping we actually have …

Ian: Another nine recorded

Stretch: Thirteen originals, two covers so we are hoping to have an album out by the end of the year put it out ourselves or get a distribution deal or something that’s what we are doing right now. We are taking a break for a little bit because we are going on a trip to Europe, not to tour just to go and when we come back we are going to be playing the Showdown.
