The Male Version of Burlesque or as it is known Boylesque

Boylesque performer Mr. Smoking McQueen

Hi there. Glad to see you back! The history and informative section of my previous articles featuring Miss RockWell DeVil Pin-Up Vilan and World Famous Bob have allowed us the opportunity to understand Burlesque through the eyes of a female performer, both on and off stage. Today I would like to introduce the male version of Burlesque or as it is known Boylesque.

Yes, that's right Boylesque- which was originally geared for female entertainers to exercise, today has males breakthrough this industry successfully and have formed countless troops supporting Boylesque actively. (From the West Coast to the East Coast groups are forming rapidly).

As always, I enjoy getting the inside scoop... on that note, ladies and gentlemen—Mr. Smoking McQueen

What inspired you to be a male burlesque performer and how did you get your name?

I’ve always been entranced by the beauty and elegance of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. When I was a kid I’d pretend I was Humphrey Bogart sailing the African Queen with Katherine Hepburn, and I’d imitate the Fonz, and pretend my training wheeled bike was a motorcycle. When I was 15, I heard about burlesque and instantly became obsessed. I did more research into modern burlesque and found out about boylesque and knew it was my calling. All I needed then was a name, I pieced together my favorite habit- smoking, with my own name- Alistair McQueen, and thus, Smokin’ McQueen was born.

Being the first male burlesque performer I interview, I must ask, are there many male performers? Name a few if you would?

Yeah, there are a couple of other performers in the world. I’ve yet to meet any of them in real life, but am very excited to meet them all at Exotic World. There’s Tigger from New York, Charlie Champale from Denver, Jai the Wonder Boy from Atlanta, and boylesque troupes in Boston and Baltimore.

Tell me about your choreography, your dance number, costume and how you go about selecting them.

I have a wide variety of performances- mostly cigarette and smoking themed. I also do the Fonz and a great Tom Cruise, Risky Business Interpretation. My costumes are always heavily sequined and rhinestoned – suspenders, sock garters, ties and bow ties, rip away pants, and sometimes a tassel to swing off my- well you know what. I usually make all my costumes myself.

Depict for me a night where you would be performing...what goes on besides jitters?

Well, I’m really one of the luckiest guys in the world. I get to hang out backstage with talented, interesting, half naked ladies. And ya know, burlesque really is a woman’s world- I’m constantly being ordered to help adjust a bra, garter, or stockings. It’s a hard job, but if I’m a good boy they’ll usually give me a good ol’ suspender snappin’!

Most embarrassing moments?

My jewels popping out of my under garments! It’s happened twice, each during the same number, and
once while filming for TV. I’ve always managed to cover up and leave a tease, but what an embarrassing thing to happen.

My very first show was my fondest memory. I had organized an anarchist non-profit burlesque troupe called the Greensboro Burlesque Collective. Our first show had over 30 performers, over 300 in the audience throughout the night, and raised over 500 dollars for a community space in downtown Greensboro.

What you can't live with out as a performer?

Snap Tape! That’s what I sew onto my clothes to make them rip away. The day I found out about snap tape my life changed.

Have you toured?

I’m planning an East Coast tour this summer. Pittsburgh, St. Louis, New York, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Boston get ready! I’ll also be at Miss Exotic World in June. See ya there!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself doing burlesque, finished with my Bachelors, and hopefully by then my Masters, and hopefully traveling the world, helping those in need with my Public Health degree.

How may people contact you or follow your growth in the Burlesque world?

Mr. Smokin' McQueen,  sir, my hat goes off to you for being part of history in the making. I thank you for challenging the norms, for shoving aside ideas that society, over time, has inevitably been sexist  towards; and for clearly striving to achieve each and every one of your goals. Your strengths are appreciated. Cleary, your charisma, your pizazz and your attitude will take you to great lengths.  I wish you the best. Ciao! Kisses from Nor Cal.
