Anthony of Mad Cats Pomade

Where did you come up with the idea to start this kind of business? I mean, making your own pomade?

Well I went through every pomade I could get my hands on and some of them where good, but not what I was looking for. So, I figured out the ingredients and made a couple batches myself. Then I started selling to my friends and it just kinda took off from there.

How is it selling?

I can't complain about business. I get a lot of support from the "rockabilly" scene, which I appreciate very much.

Can you fill us in on the process of making pomade?

Yeah. I take 2 different waxes, a couple different oils, scent color, and melt them in down in a big pot in my kitchen and hand pour that into the cans. Slap some stickers on the cans and it's ready to go out.

Is it difficult being 22 years old and running your own small business? (Financially)

I find that I get a little indifference from some older business owners, but most people are pretty cool. My family owned a very successful auto business. I used to make good money, so I had money to get it off the ground. Now it pretty much supports itself.

Have you ever tried to get Madcats into major stores? Or would you rather just stay small?

To be completely honest I'd rather stay small. I like seeing my product in underground and rock n roll shops. I like being surprised seeing someone wearing my shirt outside of my area.

Have you been able to hook up with bands and other small business owners because of Madcats?

Yes, definitely. The pomade gives me a foot in the door type thing to introduce myself to bands and other DIY business owners. It also works in the reverse too. I’ve met a lot of cool people through my pomade.

Do you sponsor bands?

I have always been a big supporter of music. I just recently began working with a couple bands, The Buckshot Boys from the northern bay area and Moonshine from Chico California.

What about festivals? I know a lot of companies go to these festivals and car shows to push their products. Is that something that you do as well?

I try to make as many of the big festivals as possible but since I’m up here in Northern Cal it can be hard to make it to a lot of them. Erine’s Chop Shop, Pin Up Purses, and The Ignition Girls have all retailed my product at big events this last year so that has helped a lot.

Well that’s about it for me, I do appreciate you taking the time to talk with me, is there anything else you would like to say, or get off your chest?

I'd just like to thank eveyone that has bought my pomade and my retailers this wouldn't be be possible without all your support so Thank You!
