The Blasters (November 15th 2009 @ Tropics Lounge in Fullerton)
The Tropics Lounge in Fullerton is probably the ideal place for the Blasters to play, because it has the feel of a 1950s Texas roadhouse and the Blasters are one of the finest Texas roadhouse style rockabilly bands from the 70s still playing today. The joint was completely packed and impossible to move around in. Big Sandy of Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys was making his debut as a D.J. that evening, and he did a great job of keeping the jivers on the dancefloor. The back patio was also full of people smoking and eating tacos from the regular taco truck that appears there for most of the rockabilly and psychobilly shows. As soon as the band started up everyone flocked inside where we were packed like sardines but enjoying every single note the Blasters were playing. Phil Alvin still the lead vocalist from the original lineup was leading the Blasters and started things off with a blistering "Border Radio," as the band played on the crowd was chanting for "Marie Marie." They continued to play classics from their 80s albums such as "American Music" and more recent songs such as a very energetic rendition of "Daddy Rollin' Stone," they did finally play "Marie Marie" at the end and the OC crowd went ballistic! The Blasters played with loads of energy and show no signs of slowing down. They put on an amazing sold out show, and as Big Sandy told me "The Blasters were a blast!"
